April 22, 2008 Currently we are NOT accepting reptiles, parrots, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, wolfdogs and livestock. Please contact us concerning other rescue needs. Thank you for understanding

Updated December 21 ,  2007- Due to losing our house and property from a situation where the landlord was foreclosed on and we were formally evicted before we found a place where we could keep the rescue intact, the are now severe restrictions on what we may do. Not all details have been worked out yet, but the following animals we may not work with for the time being. Iguanas, any caniine or feline, snakes, crocodilians, rabbits, birds, any type of livestock or animal requiring outdoor accommadations. The following animals we are able to work with gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats. and similar sized rodents. Other animals such as chinchillas and guinea pigs, other small mammals, small reptiles status unknown and we must check on each species as need arises. it is unknown how long this will last. 5 months? 1 year? 5 years? Minerva's Den will also be looking into how we can indirectly help the animals we can no longer directly care for. Thank you for understanding.

WHAT IS MINERVA'S DEN?

Minerva's Den Reptile and Exotics Rescue is a home based exotic animal rescue, adoption, and education service. For some animals, who for various reasons cannot be adopted out, Minerva's Den is a sanctuary. For most Minerva's Den is a rest stop for physical and emotional rehabilitation before moving on to a new permanent family.

WHAT DOES MINERVA'S DEN DO?

Minerva's Den rescues exotic animals in need with the goal of placing them with new families where appropriate. While most of our animals come from private owners, some arrive from other rescues and shelters.

Animals rescued include nonvenomous reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, hedgehog, sugar glider, degu and other small mammals. Some livestock and F1 wildcat crosses.

Minerva's Den is experienced with  wolfdogs/wolf hybrids however we lack wolf friendly facilities at this time. Minerva's Den does network with wolf rescuers. We are also looking for wolfdog foster homes.

Minerva's Den does not currently rescue tigers, bears, and other similar nondomestic animals.

Minerva's Den is not a wildlife rehabilitator.

Minerva's Den does not rescue dogs or cats.

Education- if you have exotic animal related questions or concerns please email minervasluv@yahoo.com . There is just not enough room in this website for comprehensive animal care information.

HOW DID MINERVA'S DEN GET STARTED?

I was born into a family that had always had a variety of pets. I was aware that there were, unfortunately, always those pets that were neglected and abused, but until I took my first job at a "ma an pa" pet store, I never realized the number of unwanted exotics. This pet store took in the iguanas and burmese pythons when space allowed. But what of those animals that were too ill, or there just wasn't enough space? Many of those animals would have returned to a cage that was too cold and too small. They may have been ignored until they passed away.

I began taking some of these animals home. Of course there is a limit to how many animals can live in one house. You must decide whether to stop accepting unwanted animals or to start actively searching for new homes.

I choose the latter path and finally arrived at the place I am today. The journey is not finished yet. A few destinations that are still to be reached include finding land for a permanent wolfdog shelter and a larger home/facility to house the growing number of unwanted reptiles.
